Electronic Service Technicians

Job Titles: Alarm System Technician, Audio/Video Service Technician, Business Machine Servicer, Consumer Products Service Technician, Communication Technician.

What's It Like?

Electronic service technicians service and repair business and household electronic equipment, such as video and audio systems, computers and peripherals, office equipment and other consumer electronic equipment and assemblies. They are employed by electronic service establishments, retail and wholesale distributors, and within service departments of electronic manufacturing companies.

Electronic Service Technicians may:
  • Inspect and test electronic equipment, components and assemblies using multimeters, circuit testers, oscilloscopes, logic probes and other electronic test instruments, tools and equipment
  • Diagnose and locate circuit, component and equipment faults
  • Adjust, align, replace or repair electronic equipment, assemblies and components
  • Complete work orders, test reports and maintenance reports
  • Supervise other electronic equipment service technicians

Educational Requirements

To be an electronic service technician, you usually need a college program in electronics, or a high school diploma plus post secondary courses in electronics and on-the-job training.

Students take an Electronics Technician Common Core program emphasizing a practical approach to electronics, where theory is dispersed with extensive lab work. Students taking the Common Core program are normally expected to enroll in a specialty option in order to achieve a level of training sufficient for entry-level employment. Some of the specialized courses may be:

  • Aircraft Electronics (AME category E)
  • Computer and Business Equipment Technician
  • Industrial Instrumentation and Controls Technician
  • Telecommunications Technician
  • Wireless Communications Technician
